Observation regarding Karloff and Lugosi

I find it interesting that two of the legends of early Hollywood horror were actually well liked men who were kind to people. It is well known that Karloff really was a gentleman and loved children. Of course, Lugosi was burdened with his drug habit for years, but he seemed like a really nice person in interviews I have watched of him. Lots of people who knew him speak well of him as a person. I find it intriguing that two people who could easily, with either their voice or visage
evoke such fear in audiences be, in real life, such nice men. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

You will find this true of most of the Horror Icons, such as Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Peter Lorre, Christopher Lee, etc, and the only modern actor that could possibly be considered a horror icon, Jeffrey Combs.

I found this to be true about Basil Rathbone when I met and worked with him briefly in 1966, shortly before his death. He was polite, charming, and a complete gentleman.

Yes I've read this and they were both great friends too. Alot of people with a bad drug habit like his are some of the nicest people around. They really are just harming themselves. Both had the ability to create some of the scariest horror characters in movie history with their face, mannerisms, and voice. Both were true talents.
