NOT THEIR BEST MOVIE

I just bought a VHS copy. Admittedly it was pretty washed-out and faded. Even then, the plot seemed forced. Eddy killed by "One Thrust" Sanders and Jeanette soldiering on. Jeanette's Production Number at the end, was an embarrassment to all. If I sound like a grouch, I'm not. Love their movies and would buy all of them on DVD, if they ever came out.

Actually this film was BETTER than SWEETHEARTS which I thought WAS not their best film for all the reasons you gave for this film. Noel Coward was said to have wept after seeing this. Not because it was so bad but they cut out his favorite number, If Love Were All.

I just saw both of these movies (Bitter Sweet and Sweethearts) and am currently watching Naughty Marietta. These are the first of their movies I've seen. I'm not a fan of musicals but I've heard so much about the MacDonald-Eddy pairings I had to save them to DVR when TCM ran several of them back-to-back.

Both have beautiful voices but I have to be honest, I fast forwarded through the songs and musical numbers and just watched the rest. Of the three I've seen so far, Bitter Sweet was the weakest. Sweethearts wasn't bad and now having seen Naughty Marietta I can say I actually enjoyed it.

For some reason I watched the movies in the reverse order in which they were made. I guess the strength of the earlier ones carried the later ones because so far I've enjoyed the earlier ones more. I don't know how many movies they made together but of the ones I recorded I have one left to watch, Rose Marie. It's one of the earlier ones in the series so hopefully I won't be disappointed. Oddly, the ones I’ve liked so far were in black and white. The ones in color were a bit overwhelming. I thought they were colorized but I noticed one said shot in TechniColor. Maybe the loudness of the color made my head ache.

mdonin; ROSEMARIE is one of their best efforts, but don't fast forward through the musical numbers. Defeats the purpose of enjoying these romantic fantasies. As for BITTER SWEET, at least you get to see George Sanders in his 'Prussian' mode and making shish-ka-bob out of Nelson Eddy.

Eddy a actor of limited skill has three (3) basic acting expressions. Happy, Sad and Surprised. His emoting would have been well suited for the Silent Era for it is all to obvious. Next time watch them in chronological order. You are right the earlier films are better.

Same here. My late elders often spoke about Jeanette and Nelson. Both had nice vocal range. Their acting is OK.
