Just wondering...

Just wondering what $10 in late-1940 money would be the equivalent of in mid-2010 dollars. Or, to take it a step further, how about $30, as that's how much was tossed out onto the sidewalk, in the snow, total, in the three gift wallets.

At the rate of $1.41 equal to $21.57 I come out with $30.00 as the equivalent of $458.94.

Continuous inflation is a detriment on society.

$21.57 divided by $1.41 equals $15.298
$15.298 times 30 equals $458.94

Plain and simple!

Just watched this movie for the first time today and really loved it. (isn't the internet wonderful). I don't want to be picky but your math is a little bit off. If it takes $21.57 today to buy what cost $1.41 in 1940 the inflation rate is 1,529.7% (21.57/1.41 x 100). So given these figures what cost $10 in 1940 would cost approximately $155 in 2010. So the amount of money in the wallets would be closer to $465. A big chunk of change by anyones standard.

Remember the plot, the wallets were given away to the employes as gifts for the Christmas Holiday. DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION! I want to work for those guys engineering firm. If I was an unemployed Rodeo Rider or a lowly Kindergarten Teacher just scrapping by, would I have had the integrity to return something I need so desperately?

These numbers seemed most relevant to me...

Average US income in 1940: $1,725

Average US income in 2010: $46,325

figuring a 250 day work year, that would mean you'd have to work about one-and-a-half days to earn $10. (and yes I know that 1940 jobs may not have followed our standard 5-day-a-week, 8 hour-a-day jobs of 2010)

translate that into 2010 wages and a day-and-a-half of work would mean $272.75.

for a wealthy person that might mean a little extra fun on a night out. for a poor person that might mean feeding a family for a month.

Well, the movie was done in 1940. So $10 in 1940 = $169.49 today (2014).

But if you want late '40s, say 1948, that would be $98.04 today.

In 1940, in grade one, I accused a classmate (Bobby) of stealing a dime (10 cents)
from me. He denied doing this so I had a tantrum in front of teacher. He then
gave me a dime. Later in day, my original dime fell out of my bookbag. I kept
quiet (I was bad). How much do I owe Bobby today, 2014 ?
