Men from the California colony?
California became a state in 1849 -- I don't think it was ever referred to as a colony, even earlier. Kind of an odd mistake in the script.
California was a Spanish Colony until 1821, when Mexico won independence from Spain and took much of the area west of the Mississippi River away from Spain.
Until 1821 it was known as the California Colony. It's probable that some people continued calling it that long after it ceased to be a colony.
