William Holden was born in 1918. Jean Arthur was born in 1900. So there's about 18 yrs age difference there. So she IS old enough to be his mother.

Being a Western Film lover,I noticed zero age diff on screen...Both actors appeared to be roughly 30! However, who gives a hoot!!
I will say that Holden should have kept the same body weight and long hair....He did not age well and by 35 he had the physique of an old woman!!
I enjoy this film each time immensely....Tucson and the son.

A perfect example of modern sensibilities imposed on a period drama. I suspect that in a town like Tucson in app. 1860, love was where you found it. There were certainly plenty of marriages with an older husband and younger wife. Why are you upset when the roles are reversed? In terms of modern sensibility, that's sexism. Were you so upset about Cary Grant or Ray Milland and Grace Kelly? There was twenty-two years between Milland and Kelly, and they were actually lovers, besides.

Now, to a subject I can actually take seriously--with spoilers. The really nice twist in this film is that the bad man is a weakling without the influence of the really bad man working in secret. That's the way unscrupulous people do things: they work behind the scenes, achieving evil ends through others, spineless others. Then there's the irreplaceable Edgar Buchanan. Also, it's unusual and effective to have the ultimate confrontation off camera. Good movie--much better than 6.9.
