All That Tension And Build Up

And we don't even get to see the shoot out. What kind of self respecting western cheats us out of the final shoot out?

I agree. Still a good movie but it takes away the enjoyment when they have off camera action.

It may have something to do with the big shootout in Stagecoach from the previous year, a film that was quite successful...and it's never been uncommon for films to emulate what has gone before, especially if said earlier film was successful with moviegoers.

Stagecoach also had the final shootout off screen, you see John Wayne fire one shot as he's diving to the ground and the rest of the action is heard but not seen.

The reason for not seeing the shoot out was to experience Phoebe's tension. Audiences being placed into Phoebe's fears during the shot out was an extension of observing her struggles throughout Arizona as the main protagonist, someone who was determined to succeed against the odds.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
