Barbara O'Neil's complexion

I saw this film last night on TCM, and I have to say in one scene there was a close-up of
Barbara O'Neil's (as the duchesse de Praslin) face, and I was shocked how pockmarked her cheek was. I thought with the use of heavy make-up and the right lighting they could have hidden her bad complexion. I still think she was a lovely lady, but I didn't expect that from 'old' Hollywood.
