I was very dissapointed by the ending..
All that agonising.. "OK, i'm off to give myself up"
"Oh look, the convicted guy has escaped"
.. But then is hanging round near (or at) the crime scene... If he wanted to be caught and punished for the 'awful thing' of robbing the body.. why escape?

Frau Grunlich's line on reading the newspaper is:
"Goodness, that murderer! He's robbed the hangman. Died on his way to jail."
So he didn't escape at all.

Gosh - Really? Was I that innatentive to the dialoge... and also misunderstood who the man who asked for a cigarette was? He looked very much like him...

To be fair, the sound in this film is quite rough. I missed a few lines here and there myself, and had to rewatch. Apparently this film was made in 1937, and released in 1940, but the sound is pretty bad compared to many films of this era.
My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!!
