How did this end?

The kid and Bogart and three others were trying to escape. It went bad and the three others were shot (or captured, I forget). Bogart and the kid hid in a train car (I guess on the prison land?). As the guards closed in, Bogart shot at them through the slightly open door of the train car. When the guards returned fire, he turned around and shot the kid. Then he put his gun on the floor by the kid (to make them think it was the kid shooting at the guards and that the guards had killed him when they returned fire). Bogart turned himself in to the guards, but the kid was alive enough to lean out of the train car and tell them the truth -- that Bogart killed the shop owner with a gun he (the kid) stole from his sister's beau.

IIRC, the final scene showed the kid on a table with his sis and her beau and others around him (including a doc). The doc intimated that the kid wouldn't make it. Then the kid died with what seemed like a sense of relief (that he'd come clean). I think he may have apologized to his sis' beau in that scene, too.

That's all I remember.
