who would you pick for Heathcliff and Catherine (besides the originals)?

Hmm, I was interested to hear everybody's input.

personally, i would pick:

Heathcliff: Joaquin Pheonix or Orlando Bloom
(they both have that tormented look, dark and
handsome and can transform into any character)

Catherine: Kate Winslet (she has soft features which would contrast with
Joaquin's hard features. That could cause them to
appear to have chemistry. Also, she has that old
fashioned classic beauty.)

reply

Joaquin, of course! What a wonderful idea. I wish I'd thought of it! You should be a casting director.

reply

Yes, as said on previous posts, Joaquin Pheonix would be a GOOD Heathcliff. I've never really thought of him before playing him, but he could be perfect.
However I disagree about Orlnado Bloom - I don't think he could be quite as dark, sinister and Byronic as Heathcliff should be. To me, nobody has ever encaptured Heathcliff as I imagine him.
I'd like to have seen Alan Rickman play him though when he was younger. Or maybe Johnny Depp - someone who's that much of a chameleon, coupled with his own mystery would be good.

As for Cathy, I think it's more difficult. I do think Kate Winslet could be good - whilst perhaps she doesn't look exactly right, she'd be able to act Cathy well.

Apparently, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are in-talks.

I don't think Angelina could pull this off. I may be biased because I don't really care for her acting but I just think she's wrong. I'm don't know if Johnny could do it either.

Nobody but Vivian Leigh should have played Cathy.

Sophia Myles -- great choice.

Joaquin Phoenix or Gerard Butler for Heathcliff.

Once you go Sawyer, you don't go Jack!

Rosamund Pike is a good choice too! I adore her!

Well, 2 people mentioned were Joaquin Phoenix and Gerard Butler fr the role of Heathcliff...

Joaquin I could see if only because he definitely has a Laurence Olivier look going for him- elegant but dark. Plus you know he can PLAY dark because of his roles in Gladiator and Walk the Line (and maybe even a little bit of his acting in The Village). He has that ability, but then there's:

Gerard Butler... I think I could really see him as Heathcliff with his sharper features (at least sharper that Joaquin) and HIS dark good looks- He just LOOKS like a Heathcliff. Plus you know he can definitely play the hardened and tormented but impassioned leading male (i.e. his role as the phantom in Phantom of the Opera- his acting was brilliant, and he really made you feel for his character and what he was going through- it was genuine. That is what whoever plays Heathcliff needs to be able to do, or else it's just not worth it).

So basically, I'm going to have to go with Gerard Butler on this one (I firmly believe, however, that Laurence Olivier's performance cannot be topped).

reply

Saw other posts and also believe

Cillian Murphy would be decent as Heathcliff- but I like Butler better
Johnathan Rehys-Myers as the other leading male perhaps- he's young, he's handsome, and he has a softer aristocratic look about him which I could see Cathy going for

If, however, Angelina Jolie is a part of it, I will NOT watch it (or if I do end up seeing it, it will only be to scoff at her performance as Cathy- cannot see that at all)

Sophia Myles and kate Wislet is far home counties and down to earth in for Carthine Earnshaw need some one fradgile and sexy. Personally althoght she dint tecically play Kate Bush Played Carthrine Earnshaw with the most acuracey.

reply

i think emily blunt would be perfect. the only person i can imagine as heathcliff though, is alan rickman.
maybe that's why i can't enjoy any of the adaptations - i don't think they ever found heathcliff!!

reply

Vivien Leigh would have been an amazing Cathy.

Well

Past actors that I would have considered would have been...

Yul Brynner (or Robert Mitchum, if he can pull of the accent) and my fav of all time, Deborah Kerr, as Heathcliff and Cathy.

I like the choice of Phoenix and Winslet.

reply

a post way up the top offered jodhi may which i think is a great choice, she isnt perhaps the most well known actress but ive seen her in a few plays and she's always been excellent, she's great at going from one emotion to the complete extreme.

reply

Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, thats it.

I wish Vivien Leigh could have played the part of Cathy back in the day.

But if they do a remake, I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny Depp, or Gerard Butler in the part. Kate Winslet would make a wonderful Cathy.

Is it true that Johnny and Angelina are thinking of doing a remake? I know he said once that he loves the 39 movie and has watched it repeatedly.

How about Sean Bean as Cathy's brother?

reply

Gah, Vivien Leigh would have been tops!
ohh I like the idea of Gerard Butler and Kate Winslet.
I really really really hope Angelina is not actually going to be in it.

reply

Great to read that a lot of people would love to see Vivien Leigh as Cathy,it would really be amazing ..

But Joachim and Kate as the magic duo would be a very good idea, probably better then Jolie and Depp

reply

Well, Johnny and Kate do great work together.

And Vivien Leigh would've been amazing.

reply

Vivien Leigh as Cathy definitely with Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff. I think she would have been "less cold" and more believable. JMO though.

Hi i live like half an hour away form the yorkshire moors where it is set. If they did do it agen they would ahve to do it so authentic like have the yorkshire accents and set on the actual yorkshire moors.

I heard a rumour just recently that they are thinking of doing it agen
Apparently Anjelina Jolie is doing it
she has been watchin a yorkshire soap opera to learn the accent apparantly

M night shayamalan was going to do a few years ago with johnny depp and angelina jolie but he chose to do the village insted

I think Johnny would be brill
But Rachel weisz would be better
u cant have two americans do an english part
I'll accept johnny but not Angelina

reply

To be honnest, I cant imagine Cate Winslet running throught the hills. I think of British actress Amelia Warner, as Cathy.

I would really like to see a younger Heathcliff and Cathy closer to the ages they were in the book so i could see Ameila Warner or Emily Blunt as Cathy and maybe Jonathan Rhys Meyers or Henry Cavill as Heathcliff.

reply

Rosamund Pike would do a fabulous job as cathy. she has the perfect appearance with her soft, yet extravagantly beautiful face.

reply

[deleted]

i really like the idea of Cillian Murphy as Heathcliff actually, although i can see him more as Hareton for some reason.

reply

[deleted]

They're all too old. Heathcliff dies when he's like 39, and for the first half of the book he's little older than 20. Joaquin Phoenix would be great for the older Heathcliff, but for the younger one it just wouldn't work. Orlanda Bloom is not a good actor, so no way would I want another adaptation ruined by bad casting.

reply

Life expectancies were shorter. Their 20 year old doesn't look like our 20 year old. I think Johnny Depp would be perfect. I just can't think of someone exactly right for Cathy, though. I think an unknown would be the best option.

reply

I think for:

Heathcliff: Johnny Depp
Cathy: Nicole Kidman
Director: Tim Burton

Scott

reply

Nicole would be perfect Isabella, i cant imagine her as Cathy.

reply

joaquin phoenix is TOO harsh to play healthcliffe

gerard butler would be perfect since in addition to his classic good looks of tall dark and handsome (reminiscent of old hollywood leading men) his acting ability is perfect for the character

kate winslet has the experience, sophistication and delicate beauty to play cathy. she is by far one of the most talented yet overlooked actresses of today. her range is incredible and she really learns to identify a character before playing them she would so accurately bring cathy to life on the screen

no one else could play these roles... in my opinion
