Betcha ten bucks that the next adaptations has different music, not no music, as theyve been working on a screen adaptation of the musical "Wicked" for a while now.
It might even end up as a Disney animated film, there's even a storyboard animation of "Defying Gravity" on YouTube somewhere, I thought it looked way cool.

You might enjoy a film called "Return to Oz" (1985). It's a dramatic non-musical adaptation of the first sequel book, it's not a musical, and it captures the rather creepy fancifulness of the books. It's well-regarded by its fans, and is a solid movie, although I can't say it hit the spot for me.
I do agree with you that a good non-musical version of this story could be made, I just don't expect one any time soon, what with "Wicked" known to be floating around Development Hell. That's a pre-sold property with enough sequel books to have the potential to be a franchise, just the sort of property that Hollywood likes, so that's what's coming down the pipe next.
