Miss Gulch killed?

I've always wondered if Miss Gulch was supposed to have been killed in the tornado since her "other side" character in Oz, the wicked witch, is the only character killed while Dorothy is dreaming.

I guess but your guess is as good as mine if not better then mine

What would have been nice is if they had pulled out of Dorothy's window after the last line and revealed Ms. Gulch's feet sticking out from under the house, ala her counterpart in Oz.

CDEGFEDCC. (Shhh!)

It would seem that way expect foramen't we all supposed to believe what happened to Dorothy is a dream?

reply

Ms. Gulch's counterpart didn't die under the house with her feet sticking out. That was her sister.

reply

If she's not dead, she'll be coming back for Toto!

I intend to live forever.
So far, so good.

If she's not dead, she'll be coming back for Toto!

Aunt Em tells Gulch, "Just because you own half the county....."

If Gulch had massive property and land-holdings, in the wake of a devastating tornado, she'd have quite a mess to clean up, both physically and legally.

I would imagine that the "Toto issue" would be put on the back burner -- and maybe never returned to.

A movie only addresses a brief time in the principals' lives. We can only guess what happened later.

reply

The short answer would be no. Remember, it was all just a dream.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

I always wanted to think that Miss Gulch was killed in the storm when Dorothy's house landed on the Witch of the East.

reply

Here's what should have happened...

At the end of the movie Miss Gulch returns for Toto but her sister (who bears a resemblance to Glinda) shows up and threatens her away!

reply

I always wanted to think that Glinda was the counterpart to Dorothy's mother. Originally Billie Burks ~Glinda~ was going to be a neighbor of Dorothy's in Kansas and had a feud going on with Miss Gulch, but it was cut out b/c they thought the Kansas scenes were already too long.

reply

Miss Gulch was a gifted school teacher and a beloved member of the community. The fact that she was exasperated with Toto's annoying behavior and Dorothy's failure to control her nuisance of a dog does not indicate a flaw in her character.

reply

Wow, that's a wicked thought...

reply

I think Dorothy saw her swept up in the tornado, still furiously pedaling away on her bike, before she hit her head and passed out!

Really, Miss Gulch was out on her bike when the tornado hit, in a landscape that offered no cover, the odds are decent that she was killed in real life.

reply

"Really, Miss Gulch was out on her bike when the tornado hit." How do we know that??? After Toto jumps from her
basket, he still has to get home, he still has the reunion with Dorothy, then there's a dissolve AFTER Dorothy has packed,
walked to Professor Marvel, and talked to Professor Marvel.

Miss Gulch could've easily (and most likely) gotten home BEFORE the tornado struck. And being a well-off and prudent
character, she most likely also had a storm seller. She was a bitch, but she wasn't stupid.

It's more than likely she survived. One can only hope that since putting Toto down was "a matter for the sheriff to
decide", the most likely humane law official spared the dog with a warning. I'm sure Miss Gulch's rotten reputation
was well-known to the town, and Dorothy finally "got a brain" and stopped going by Miss Gulch's house.

reply

Considering how long it takes to get from one place to another by bicycle in a place as spread-out as rural Kansas, the odds are actually pretty good that Miss Gulch was still a long way from home and pedaling away when the tornado came through. Of course tornadoes have a narrow path so it may have missed her, but then Dorothy did see her up in the tornado before she hit her head!

But you're right, I'd forgotten that it was "for the sheriff" to decide. And if the sheriff came through and saw a cute little girl with a bandaged head babbling about witches and wizards and clutching "my only friend"... Toto would be safe.

reply

There is nothing in the script that suggests Miss Gulch lived very far away, bicycle or not. Furthermore, if
Dorothy passed by her place on her way home (on foot), then she couldn't have lived all that far from the
Gale farm.

reply

Both were played by Margaret Hamilton (similiar to the Dorothy's family/friends=wizard" deal, and don't forget eh Wizard of Oz himself Frank Morgan, playing multiple parts.

reply

Actually, I think she was killed by the tornado because she was out on the road on her bicycle when the storm hit. Seeing how far Dorothy's home was from town, I don't believe it would have taken long for the tornado to have slurped her up before coming after the Gale farm.
