Why is this film not out on DVD?

Beetlejuice - UK

As far as I can make out, this film is not available on video or on DVD. Ownership of the rights seems to be at the toot of the problem. Heads needs to be banged together so that film fans of this wonderful trio can again enjoy their antics. It is one of their best. Can anyone advise if we are going to be able to get a DVD copy in the near or distant future?

reply

Hear hear. I'm another potential customer who wants to know what's going on here. It's one of Will Hays's best. Quite apart from the comedy itself, just the name, Captain Viking, has me smiling.

Just logged on to ask the same question! The more of us do so, perhaps whoever it's down to will make this wonderful film available like the other Will Hays are. I just hope it's not the case that the print has been lost or destroyed. I've tried a few places, "MovieMail" for example, but all they've said is it's "not available in the UK". As far as I remember, it was last shown on Channel 4 in about 1992/1993. I did video it at the time, but stupidly taped over it ... whata mistaka tomaka!!!

I also taped it when it was last broadcast, but I rarely get around to throwing anything away. So, last night I watched it again, as I was transferring it to DVD, and found myself crying with laughter. It's simply so well constructed, so full of jokes, with so many well rehearsed routines. I can't understand why snooty critics rate it so poorly. Scenes may borrow from the Marx Brothers, but so what if they do? It's all part of the one great tradition.

(By the way, transferring the film to DVD means that I now have a VHS tape of the film that I'm willing to give away to a fellow fan. P&p only. First come first served -- actually first come, the only one served.)

I managed to pick up a copy of a copy in Blackpool recently. Although it's not an original it's still watchable and great fun seeing Will Hay and friends in this underated comedy.

Picked up a copy on dvd on e bay, its pretty worn with poor sound but as others say the comedy is timeless ,this one really is a contender for Will Hay's best film. I noticed at the end of the film it shows this was made for Twenteth century fox (A American company) ,I wonder if this is the reason this has not been released? For a big company like that, this film is small fry.It would be great if someone would do a decent remastering programme of Will Hays films or at least this one and "Oh mr. Porter". His films still sell steadilly,at a guess I would say they sell better than say George Formby or old mother Riley ect.

I've just transferred my copy (Off Channel 4 sometime in the 80s?) to DVD. I have always thought it was one of the best - and the pole scene is a great moment of British cinema.

can we not see about some sort of petition? im sure numerous fan clubs would be interested in advertising it...

anyone waiting for red dwarf movie or is that just me?

reply

Yep
Me too, I have been looking everywhere for this movie. Why cant they release it?
OH Mr Porter would be another of his greats.

reply

"Oh Mr Porter" was once voted the greatest comedy of all time.
Pity so many Will Hay films have not been released on DVD individually.
His comedy is timeless. So many modern so called comedies are forgotten five minutes after you have watched them.
