I don't expect an answer any time soon, but there was a sign in the boxing venue that said "No white trunks". What's that about?

i just saw this movie a couple of days ago on tcm and i was also intrigued by that sign.
shareMy guess is that the white of the trunk was a visual interference to the ref or anyone trying to focus in on the action. Black is easier to see in motion.
