Remake of 'The Life Of Jimmy Dolan'

This is a remake of "The Life Of Jimmy Dolan" starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
Both films are equally good and well acted.
Both films hold up well and are recommended.
What do you the viewers think of either film?

Never seen "The Life of Jimmy Dolan," though I have wanted to see it, as it is one of John Wayne's first films, relatively speaking.

"They Made Me a Criminal" Pretty much what everyone else has said. Claude Rains is an odd choice to play a New York City detective. Busby Berkeley, who is better known for his musicals, is an odd choice as a director. And the scene with the strip poker game between the Dead End Kids and Ronald Sinclair, is an odd scene. If for no other reason, by the Code which Hollywood operated under at that time, one of the things not to be depicted in a film was a strip poker game. It makes you wonder how the filmmakers ever got that scene pass the censors and into the film.

Claude Rains was, indeed, as you say, an odd choice to play a New York City detective, but nothing was wrong with how he played it. In fact, Rains was terrific! And it must have been a rare and refreshing change of pace to Rains himself; he usually played, both before and since TMMAC, British/European-accented, urbane and often "corrupt officials" (see Casablanca!) and villains. When I saw this film, I didn't realize Rains was the cop on fugitive John Garfield's trail until I read the end credits!

I prefer the original. Although I'm very fond of John Garfield, I feel that the overall main cast of the original was better; Fairbanks, Young, MacMahon and Kibbee. And of course, it was great seeing a cute little 13 year old Mickey Rooney. I recorded it off of TCM and have watched it several times. I'll purchase it if it ever gets released on dvd. I see that They Made Me a Criminal is available on dvd, but I'm a little wary about purchasing it, because it appears that what is available may be of inferior quality. If you have it on dvd or know someone who does, please tell me what you think of the quality.

I just bought this one ( http://jweinsteinlaw.com/images/Oldies/089218402097.jpg ) on DVD and have no complaints.

Is this a record time between original and remake? Only six years.
