Hatfields last words

Hatfield was asking if anyone sees Judge(unintelligible to me)-tell him his S....then he dies mid sentence. Was he trying to say he was actually the Judges son?
Anyone else catch that?

reply

Yes, I caught that too-- and I think he's saying he's the judge's son. I also think it's related to the insignia on the silver cup that Mrs. Mallory recognized, and Hatfield said he'd won in a bet. I think perhaps that was really his family crest on the cup, but he declined to associate his father's good name with himself, given that he'd fallen into disrepute as a gambler. Anyway that's my guess, but I've been trying for the last half hour to see if I can find out anything about his character and so far I can't. Perhaps this is explained in the original story on which the movie is based.
I've seen Stagecoach many times, but this is the first time I've caught that line. It's that kind of movie, always rewarding another viewing.

Just found this was discussed on this board previously in the thread "Hatfield's Story."

I watch it whenever it's on and each time there is always something new to catch.

The captions say "If you see Judge Greenfield, tell him his son---"
Changed Greenfield to Hatfield. "That's what I'm *called*, yes"
