I'm 50 minutes into this film and I don't give a damn about a single one of the characters. If they all live or die I couldn't care less.

Did you watch as far as the twist? I wasn't sure what to make of this movie until then. It seemed to cast the U-boat commander as an anti-hero, which I thought odd for a British movie in 1939.
Nobody gets to be a cowboy forever.
A case of needing to watch the film a bit longer for the twist to take place.

I agree. I don't understand how you can be commenting on a movie midway through it. I do agree that this was a hard movie to like in spite of it being fairly well done. There was also a couple of things that occurred in the plot that made me cringe.
