The Rules of the Game is perhaps the best film ever made, certainly better than Big Trouble in Little China. Grand Illusion may be the more accesible film, it has an easier message to swallow, a happier ending, more jokes, and Hollywood music. Rules of the Game is a masterpiece of form, style, plot, character, tone, and moral, the acting is magnificent, the camera work fascinating, and though the film is not visually beautiful it doesn't need to be, its beauty relies upon all of the levels at play, and the ingenuity that went into making this.
I just watched both of these movies today, they were both great, but I think I like The Grand Illusion better.
shareRegle is clumsy and obvious: Illusion isn't as great as its reputation, but it's a very long way from being as bad as Regle.
The name is a comment on his lack of screen charisma and not a private fantasy
^I agree with this... And like Grand Illusion more

I prefer Rules of the Game, although i really liked Grand Illusion too. I just felt that some of the stylistic motifs introduced in Illusion were more fleshed out in Rules. Such as the depth in the shots. In Illusion there is a scene in a room at the first camp where you have the officers talking in the room then with frame within a frame, outside the window the soldiers are doing drills. The depth in these was just spectacular. it's the kind of movie i walk out of and just want to sit down and write essays. as a funny sidenote after watching rules of the game for the first (and so far only) time which left me so excited about the possibilities of film, I got roped into watching 'clueless'. i've never had such an enormous pitfall as far as film goes.
shareboth were terrible. but if had to choose, i'd go with grand illusion. it was less boring and stupid.
shareGrand Illusion because they don't kill any animals.. Beside, Grand Illusion is one of the best films ever anyways.
