One question...

Why were the keys on the piano moving on their own in the play scene?

reply

never mind, im stupid, it was an automatic playing piano. By the way, this is the most brilliant film ever made, especially the hunting scene.

Foreshadowing! Do you remember when Schumacher shot down Andre, and Marceau was telling Chesnaye later about it... "He didn't suffer. He just dropped, like game shot down" or something around those lines.

Objectively, it was a player piano. Such pianos had a forced air mechanism inside so that when fitted with a "roll" with holes punched in it, the keys moved. Before any sort of audio recording technology was widely available, that was the only way to mechanically reproduce a sort of music in a private residence. So for a while they were very popular.

Subjectively, it introduces the theme of the "ghosts" on the stage.
