Similarities to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina

Did anyone recognize how the main plot involving Andre, Christine,Robert and Octave is strikingly similar to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina? Andre takes the place of Vronsky as the love-mad, passionate and possibly suicidal young gentleman. Christine is Anna, the beautiful society woman in a loveless marriage with Robert, her formal and empty husband. Octave is some mixture of the gentle and philosophical Levin and the carefree womanizing Oblonsky. The similarities are striking especially in the first half of the film. I don't mean this as a criticism of the film only as an observation. Is the similarity in plot intentional or accidental?
