I'm sure Pesci learned a thing or two from Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart, too. But it's a no-brainer for me to agree that Cagney has to be Joe's strongest influence!

Totally agree. That definitely came to mind instantly as something I could see a Pesci character doing!

The difference is, Cagney's screen characters usually roughed up people who deserved it; whereas Pesci's characters, as in CASINO, goes into mad dog overkill at the slightest provocation, e.g. the scene where he uses a pen to mutilate a guy who was being a jerk to Pesci's buddy (Robert DeNiro) but I don't think the poor fool deserved THAT extreme of a treatment, maybe just getting punched out would have been sufficient.
