Strangely enjoyable is the word.

It's not a great a film by any stretch of the imagination, but I agree that it isn't bad.

If another actor had been cast as Dr. X with the same level of performance that Bogie (who isn't really bad in this movie) created, I think people would look at this film a little more fondly than they do today. That Bogart is such an iconic figure in motion pictures as a tough-guy anti-hero makes it difficult to see him in such a role.

No blah, blah, blah!

Agree with the OP. Im also working through the same DVD set, and I thought this film was quite good. Certainly not a 3/10 like the current main page user review suggests. Sadly im not familiar with Bogart, and I thought he played the part well, he was very creepy and odd, adding atmosphere to the scenes he featured in. Perhaps fans of Bogart are scoring this down? I've read that Bogart hated this film, would be interesting to see the score had he said the opposite.

I thought it was pretty decent as well.
Bogart's character is basically a vampire... with a psuedo-scientific explanation. Still, he's 'undead' and out to steal blood to stay alive.
Bogart's voice is the only weak bit of his portrayal... he doesn't do much with it to sound like an educated man of medicine OR a creepy guy who tortured babies and returned from the dead to feast on the living. Hah!

Still, it's a fun movie.
