The Rains Came - Haunting music!

Movie girl: I really love this film and have rewatched it several times. I was quite touched when Dr. Safti takes Edwina to the school where she asks questions about the haunting music. And then she asks him to translate; I think we are to believe that she is becoming interested in him personally and senses that the song might have some import. When he translates the song, Edwina repeats some of the last lines, and it seems her face is transformed by her feeling for him. He dismisses it as sentimental nonsense, but we can tell that he is becoming aware of her regard and may be starting to have some feeling for her.

That's my favorite part of the entire amazing film. I wish I could find out more about the music. What style is that, where the musicians improvise in free variation and they're singing traditional words in "ancient ceremonial language" which I presume is Sanskrit?

Well, the city's being built and I'm winning this game. So don't interrupt us with trifles.

Movie girl: I Am not sure, but it is my favorite part of the film too! I
like to run the DVD (originally on VHS) back over this part and actually wrote down the beautiful words Tyrone Power translated for Myrna Loy in their roles. I thought of something like Sanskrit too.

This film is beyond superb in my feeling. My mom loved it. Every time it came on TV she would turn it on for my sister and me (in the 60's). I never forgot that neat part of my growing up years. I love everything about the film. Many speak highly of the special effects, but I love the emotional aspects of the film. Very sad ending. Funny that the remake is different in the end. Have you seen the 50's one with Lana and Richard Burton?
