Victor McLaglan *Spoilers*

Victor McLaglan as 'Crusher McKay' is quite good in this otherwise tepid boat opera. Playing a sociopathic Chief Engineer who believes he's charming, witty, and brave. In reality he has all the charm of a rutting moose, the ethics of your average pit viper, and the temper of a spoilt two year old.

When he manages to let the nurse into quarantine-exposing her to cholera-where she becomes trapped with the rest, simply because he wants to bed her was a thoroughly despicable act. And McLaglan does it with diabolical style. He makes the character truly vile by keeping him human, throwing in touches of outer goodness that belies the Devil beneath.

There are other performances in this film that also stand out, particularly Barry Fitzgerald. Too bad they couldn't save the film though...

It seemed to me that Crusher didn't believe that there was an epidemic. He was sort of thick headed - at least until he became sick himself.
