How did they get away with the line "I'd hate to pull a boner in front of you." ?

"You're going to cross Sinai?"
"Moses did"

Presuming you're serious, a "boner" in this context means a dilemma.
There's an actual old Batman comic where Joker talks about giving Batman his greatest boner yet.

In this context:

"pulling a boner" means "screwing up".

As in "a bonehead maneuver".

That Broad is causing a boner!

My grandfather would say it when he screwed up or made a mistake.

I want to win the Nobel Peace Prize so bad that I would kill to get it

Yes, "pull a boner" is old slang for "make a mistake".

Though, for the meaning you thought of, to get wood, it's "pop a boner", not "pull a boner". With that kind of boner, "pull" would be something else altogether.

I remember the junior high baseball coach talking about pulling a boner and half the team trying to suppress their giggles.

One of the most classic screwups in baseball history is known to this day as "Merkle's boner."

A base running mistake, Merkle's Boner occurred in 1908 when Giants rookie Fred Merkle, on first base when the winning run was knocked in, ran into the dugout as fans poured onto the field, instead of touching second on the hit as required by the rules. Cubs Hall of Famer Johnny Evers retrieved the ball amidst the crowd, touched second, and completed the force out, ending the inning. The game was ruled to have ended in a tie and replayed. The Cubs won, going to the World Series (instead of the Giants) as a direct result.
