Location of the mountain landing

Does anyone know where the scene where McPherson and the doctor land in the mountains is? I was very impressed with the aerial photography.

I was impressed with the areial photography, too! My thought regarding location was that this could be Panama, as it seemed to be a not very wide island, since the distance could be crossed in a couple of hours, but with obviously rough terrain that made flying treacherous. Perhaps another IMDb user will have film knowledge or resources to verify the location. What did you think of the scene near film's end with the condor? Earlier, when they seemed willing to drop the nitroglycerin on the flock, I thought it was cruel. I felt a tad differently when I observed what a danger they could be.

Miracle on the Hudson ring a bell? We were on a flight that hit ONE goose and it felt like we'd been in a car and run over a medium sized mammal... and we had to return to the terminal.

Paul Mantz did the flying and at the time this film was being made he was based in Los Angeles, out of the airport at Burbank. I'm guessing here but it's quite likely the location was as close to Hollywood as possible, for budget reasons. Maybe Nevada or Arizona, judging by the look of the terrain but it could have been a lot closer. Check out the new Criterion Blu-Ray for a feature on the aerial unit. The cinematography is actually somewhat more impressive than the flying, in my opinion. The man flying the plane on camera is like Fred Astaire - dancing beautifully while the camera plane is more like Ginger Rodgers - in heels and backwards!

Yes, the two planes (subject and camera) just had to fly steadily. But it was one very long shot of the plane circling the plateau, making a pass and circling back around.

I agree that the "location" was supposed to be Panamana, Peru or maybe Venezuala. My original question was as to where it was actually filmed. Nevada, Arizona or California are all possibilities. The dryness of the terrain makes me lean toward Nevada.
