I expected more

I just saw Ninotchka for the first time today, and for being one famous movie, i was disappointed. I understand that she was supposed to be focused, humorless, and completely committed to working for her ideals for the first part of the film, but I thought she came across as wooden and heavy. Her lines were better than her delivery. I enjoyed Melvyn Douglas's light touch and gentle smirk.

The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was)

i dunno what your problem is, i loved the movie, i think, it is probably garbo's best work. i love her in that movie and have seen it about 100 times, because i cannot stop watching her.

Rose: Ned was sort of the town idiot.
Sophia: When, on your days off?

reply

I agree with you Bree.
Garbo does come off as stiff at first, but that's her character. She loosens up as she lightens up and enjoys herself. This is one of my favorites and Garbo is so beautiful and Melvyn Douglas is charming and fun. Great chemistry between them.

I love when she first wears that cute hat. Very French and stylish vs the Russian sensible look!

And I think the beginning part is even better. Her coldness and stiffness made all her lines funnier, not only because the dialogue is great, but also cause it's Garbo! It's a perfect movie, the ending is a little bit weaker.

You know...I am not a fan of comedey...I see the movies that are out today..Im surprised if I laugh, but with this movie I was actually laughing out loud..I mean Ninotchka is so funny, so robotic, so charming that I just fell in love with this movie.

Yeah, the scene when they're crossing the street is one of the funniest parts for me, particularly the "Must you flirt?" line.

I love the way Garbo delivers the lines: "Your appearance is not distasteful" and "Chemically we're quite sympathetic". Just her deadpan delivery makes the scenes hysterical.

Personally, I'd argue that this is probably Garbo's best work; especially in the later scenes, where she "loosens up", you really see how charming and funny she could be. It's a shame she didn't do more movies of this sort.

reply

Not to mention the fact that the lines were there for her to deliver. Some great quippy writing and yes, great delivery. At times though I wondered if Garbo looked a bit manly or even tranny.

I have watched this film many times....it is just great. I loved Garbo and her three Russian friends. Ina was also fantastic as the princess .

reply

Me too. I expected some laughs but no. The movie is terribly outdated and overrated besides the second half feels more like mere propaganda rather than a comedy.

But at least I know who inspired Schwarzenegger to play The Terminator, mmm on a second thought The Terminator is more expressive than Sgt Ninotchka!

5/10

Funny I watched it so many times, and keep thinking that I cannot expect more.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention. Anything else? When's your autobiography coming out. We're all just dying to read it. It'll probably be cram full of little personal insights, huh?
