is it ratings abuse?

I was checking the ratings and find that of all the age groups, there was a big disparity among women over the age of 45 from all the ratings from other groups. Looking at the demographics, the voting was about the same as any other age group except for the vote of 1. I find it unlikely that 49 out of 119 mature women thought it was that really bad?

I suspect you are right but then rating abuse is rampant all over IMDB - there are even "ratings" for films that are known to be lost!! Some people just love to post low scores on films with stars they don't like. I also suspect these people often have multiple IMDB accounts and vote the same way over and over to drive the ratings down - or up - as they want.

IMDb "has its ways" of readjusting the ratings to account for some forms of abuse, but surely not all. Check out ratings for "chick flicks" like SEX AND THE CITY where a huge percentage of the reviewers who scored it on opening day gave it a 1 and were listed as male, even though statistics showed 8 out of 10 people who went to see it on opening day were women. Even NEWSWEEK magazine did an article on the sexism aroused by that film over the summer and pointed to IMDb's nonsensical ratings statistics, suggesting "voter fraud", to prove it. It happens whenever a woman's film, gay film, film aimed at the Mormon subculture, lefty documentaries by Michael Moore, etc. come along.

But who could hate MIDNIGHT? It seems a practically impossible film to dislike.

Perhaps it was when Colbert's character said in the court room scene that a husband has the right to knock his wife around, which surprised me in a comedy written by Billy Wilder. Then again I heard Robert Osborne say during the appearance he makes on the DVD, that Wilder was very upset with changes the director made to the script without consulting him, and since Osborne also said the director wasn't an easy person to work with, I wouldn't doubt that those words were added by him. But things like that come up in the best of films of that time, you just have to forgive them for the sexist attitude and enjoy the good parts of the film which I, as a woman of 46, got a great kick out of and rated it as a 10.

Actually if you look across a range of movies I believe you'll find that women over 45 generally rate pretty much everything harder than all other age / genre groups. This could mean that they have narrower tastes (period romances at the top) and also that they are harder to really please. In the same way, girls under 18 seem to rate a lot of movies higher. I have observed the 'women over 45' thing a lot because I'm always having trouble finding movies my wife would like - partly because she likes action & crime & lots of fight scenes & killing. Meanwhile I'm into romantic comedies, including all the old ones which seem sweeter & purer. I recognise there's no hope for us, but there it is!

Strange finding. You wouldn't expect such ratings from older ladies.
