Theme Song

The theme song from the music used throughout is reminiscent of "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You". So lovely -- so sad -- so haunting.

I believe you're referring to the third piece, Plaisir D'Amour. Beverly Sills and Nana Mouskouri have covered that one very nicely.

Hey, thanks Joe. Yes, it's the third song that reminds me of the Elvis tune (odd, I know). Thanks for the info!

"Plaisir d'Amour" is also performed brilliantly by "Marie Antoinette" (sung by Moira Smiley, mouthed onscreen by Joely Richardson) in "Affair of the Necklace" (2001). Unfortunately this version is not on the soundtrack album for that film. So I bought the Nana Mouskouri version. It is one of my favorite songs. I really enjoyed hearing Irene Dunne's beautiful performance of "Plaisir d'Amour" in "Love Affair" -- did she really sing it? Even if she didn't, she still deserved her Oscar nomination -- fantastic performance. Charles Boyer's performance, especially his face when he realizes Irene's condition, was one of the best performances of his career and deserves more credit -- he certainly deserved an Oscar nomination. Also, Maria Ouspenskaya's scene at the piano and farewell to Boyer and Dunne was also spectacular -- thank goodness she received an Oscar nomination.

From IMDB soundtrack of "Affair of the Necklace" (2001):
"Plasir d'amour"
Written by Johann Martini
Arranged and recorded by the Dufay Collective
Performed by Moira Smiley

Plaisir D'Amour is also used to magnificent effect by Aaron Copland in his soundtrack from THE HEIRESS in 1949. He weaves that melody throughout the fabric of the film highlighting the fragility of Olivia de Haviland's performance as Catherine Sloper. Brilliant film score.

Can you reallly be asking if Irene Dunne sang "PLaisir d'Amour" ?? She was a big star of musicals and operettas, especially well-known for Jerome Kern melodies: " Make Believe" in "Show Boat", " Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Lovely to Look At" in "Roberta", "The Folks on the Hill" in "High, Wide, and Handsome", and "Don't Ever Leave Me" in "Sweet Adeline".

I'm surprised you didn't mention Irene Dunne's unforgettable rendition of "My Dreams Are Gone With The Wind" from "The Awful Truth".

The number has some wind effects in it but you'll just have to use your imagination about them.

Joan Baez covers it on one of her early albums. I remember that
she sang English lyrics, and possibly the French ones as well.
I'll always remember the English version:

"The joys of love
are a but a moment long
but the pain of love
endures the whole life long."

Not odd, because the Elvis song took the melody (not the lyrics) from "Plaisir d'Amour."

Stuck in purgatory.
