Why was she in a wheelchair?

I walked away from watching the movie for a few minutes to get something to eat, and when i come back shes singing with orphans in a wheelchair. Can someone please fill me in on what happened to her? Thanx.

On her way to meet Michel, Terry is hit by a car. He waits for hours. She's in the hospital and decides he shouldn't know about what has happened until she is well.

It's a little vague. I think she's suffering from "Hollywood Plot Syndrome". But I don't care.

Yes, hence the wheelchair...
