subtitles very disappointing

I might have liked this but the subtitles omitted so many of the words it was very frustrating. Especially in the last twenty minutes or so. They talked on and on with barely a subtitle to tell you what they were saying. Any ideas why?

See my post about the characters being brother and sister. Maybe the old man was their father and was trying to keep them apart. Remember they both had the same name "LAST?", had the same birthday, and grew up in an orphanage.

I agree; I speak a little French and could tell they left quite a bit of the dialog out of the subtitles.

I agree. I speak no french at all, but even I can understand "Armoir" (sp?). No need to translate it to "wardrobe" 50 billion times, which doesn't even make sense to begin with.
The translator must not have had a firm grip on English; there were plenty of typos!

Haven't seen the new(ish?) Criterion DVD? Subtitles are fine...

My dog has no nose.

The subtitles were good on the 2011 TCM showing. I noticed no problems.
