ATMOSPHERIC!

Forget about this being one of Hitch's 'lesser' efforts and for Laughton hamming outrageously (which I didn't mind, especially). This thing, for all it's staginess, really gets it right with the dark, creepy, windswept look and feel of a Cornish smuggler's Inn and surrounding area. Probably worked because it WAS so stagey looking.

this is an awesome film........i loved it.....the characters are superbly crafted....love Humpfred's "Chadwick" especially at the end. an the gloom look of the film suited it...u felt as if u were gonning into some underworld....v.effective at the start.

I'm surprised to see it only has a 6.5/10 rating on here. I thought it was excellent!

Oh, we're going to talk about me again, are we? Goody.

I just love this film. You're right - the atmosphere is just right. I visited the actual Jamaica Inn when I was about 18 and was chilled to the bone, and the film does it justice. By the way, if anyone is heading down to Cornwall, don't miss Jamaica Inn - it's great. And there's a very nice Du Maruier museum there too.

Absolutely. Shabby, unkempt, claustrophobic, It's a beautiful mix of convention and realism; thoroughly hopeless and bleak.

The truth is, that it is Hitch's lesser film. The worst I have seen from him. But this is also true that Hitchcock's lesser films still are much better than most of the other directors' work. Halfway through the movie it got really 'hitchcockian' and atmospheric. Laughton was really entertaining and I didn't mind his over the top performance at all. I freakin' enjoyed it. He stole the whole show.

The truth actually is, that that's your opinion. Learn the difference.

I knew I would enjoy it from the ship wreck in the beginning. What fun it must have been to make that! I do love creepy places and this inn reminded me of the odd manor in "The Old Dark House" also of the 30s.
