Public Domain?

Is this film in public domain? I ask because I'm careful about what I watch on the internet, and I only watch things if it's legal and, well, not available in my area. I could wait around until TCM might show this, but that could be very long from now.

reply

I doubt it's public domain, but Netflix has it, so it's on DVD.

The 1939 film is not in public domain. The 1922 silent version with Lon Chaney is in public domain as is the original novel.

I don't know...but both the 1922 and the 1939 make me cry like I've never cried before... I'm sure kids these days watch Disney (I did back then too...but before colour...) My mother told me this was my favourite film when I was a kid. I'm watching it tonight and crying crying crying my eyes out... I can now see why she said I was a sensitive child!!!!

This film isn't in the public domain. Many of the majority of RKO's film library ( (Examples: King Kong, Top Hat, Bringing Up Baby, Kitty Foyle, Citizen Kane, Cat People, The Thing From Another World) have been bought by Turner entertainment. Turner had also bought many other libraries like Associated Artists Productions which included many black and white Popeye cartoons and pre-1950 Warner Brothers films and there is the pre-1986 MGM library. The also bought the majority of Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears cartoons. since 1996 Turner has been bought by Warner Brothers.
