One living member of the cast

Ruth Terry, who played Betsy Ann (the young lady enamored with Sir Henry on the cruise) is the only living member of the cast. I suppose that's not surprising since it was filmed 71 years ago. Still, it's a bit sad that the cast is down to one.

Interesting. Long live, Ruth Terry.

I just watched the movie and thought it was curious that the young lady and her mother did not return after their single scene. It seemed as if they were meant to be significant characters.

I agree. I am not sure whether they were even mentioned in Doyle's book or not. I thought that Ruth may have a larger role as competition for Sir Henry's love alongside Wendy Barrie, but instead she had the rather out of place 30 second scene. I guess her role was to show that Sir Henry was not simply a womanizing man, but truly loved Wendy Barrie's character. Still, it would be nice to know if her character was included in the original book.

I read the book, but I don't remember Betsy Ann or her mother. In the movie, they don't have much point. If they establish anything about Sir Henry's character it's that he's picky about appearances. I think Betsy Ann's eyeglasses were supposed to indicate she was plain and unattractive.

No, she's not in the book. She was just a device to inject a small moment of levity into the movie and point out that Sir Henry was now a rich and eligible heir and fair prey for women hunting a rich husband. Sir Henry's relief at them leaving was evident.

reply

Welp, she's dead now.
