Clark Gable was the true Best Actor Oscar Winner in 1939.

Just ridiculous.

reply

Hardly. Gable was just playing Gable. Same old same old.
Donat deservedly won the Oscar. Jimmy Stewart could have easily won it as well. But Gable? Nah, not over those two anyhow.

reply

Wrong. Absolutely wrong. 100% wrong.

Clark Gable is Rhett Butler. One of the greatest, most iconic performances of all time.

I agree that Clark Gable should have won the Academy Award.

Goodbye Mr. Chips offered very little challenge to the lead actor. Not much to do but to let the make up department age him and say his lines. It isn't the fault of the actor, it was just a thin role. Any decent performer could have played that part well. Donat won because Hollywood has always loved movies where the characters age like Chips and perhaps because it didn't seem fair to give every award to GWTW. Chips was also a "prestige" picture and the industry wanted to show that they produced art, not just entertainment.

Gable had a better part and brought so much more to it. Think of the effect Gable had on both that movie and on audiences. I can't imagine anyone else filling his role in GWTW properly. The Oscar was rightfully his.

Fair play, now that you two critical genii have concluded on an online forum that Gable in fact deserved the Oscar, the Academy may well revoke the accolade and posthumously award it to Gable.

Just kidding, your opinions are insignificant.

The awarding is done...snipe as much as you want. Donat won because his performance was truly amazing...especially the way he "aged" over the years. Gable was very good, granted, but he was just playing Gable. Donat was inspired brilliance.
