Great movie

Just watched it on this very rainy Saturday! It was listed as a 4 star movie and stated to be the best of a slew of remakes...however I see the 1944 one has a popular following. Which is the best to people who have seen both? :)

Come on, Franklin! It'll be a fun trip!

I think the 1940 version is superior. Anton Walbrook is absolutely amazing. At the end you just believe his is insane. I like that there wasn't a romance between the wife and the man who 'rescues' her. Not that I'm anti-Joseph Cotten, far from it. But the ex-cop in the UK version is such a wonderful character!

I just watched it again tonight in honour of Anton Walbrook's birthday. It's an 'extra' on the Boyer DVD. It should have it's own Criterion, but they haven't asked me yet.

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

I really think I prefer this version! Anton Walbrook is just so terrifically slick and evil, and I especially loved his final moments. Also, although Ingrid Bergman won her first Oscar in the remake, and although she was gorgeous, I lean toward Diana Wynyard, an actress I've only seen before in "Cavalcade", where I didn't much care for her. Bergman did her best to be tremulous and frail, but she was still luminous and seemed healthy as a horse...Wynyard seems much more appropriate as the victimized heroine, and gives a subtle, effective performance. Frank Pettingell is also delightfully scene-stealing in support. The only weak link, I felt, was Nancy, the parlor maid, a rather clumsy performance by Cathleen Cordell - Angela Lansbury in the remake made a much stronger impression!
