I think it's highly improbable that a house in a high-end neighborhood and containing all that beautiful stuff would remain undisturbed for 10 years in London where crime was rampant in the 19th century.

What is that supposed to convey? That he couldn't be two places at once.
It's rather confusing.
That wasn't him on the street---it was just somebody else walking down the steet.
