Criterion DVD and Blu-ray Oct. 11, 2011

As long rumored, Criterion is finally releasing The Four Feathers on standard DVD and Blu-ray on October 11, 2011.

Retail prices are $29.99 (standard), $39.99 (Blu-ray). Obviously most sites will have them at lower prices.

Extras include: Audio commentary by film historian Charles Drazin; a booklet written by critic Michael Sragow; an interview with David Korda, son of Zoltan; the theatrical trailer; and a short film, A Day at Denham, featuring Zoltan Korda on the set of The Four Feathers.

Long awaited, but it looks as though it has been worth the wait. Also see criterioncollection.com.

Hurrah! I thought this was a rumor that would never be realized.

I wonder if there will any difference in running length or scenes from the MGM dvd. There was always discussion of a longer version with more scenes around Omdurman, but that footage may be lost forever. Nothing in the criterion promo about new material, simply a new print. Still looking forward to it.

I think the MGM/UA disc was the original, full-length British film (like another of their DVDs later brought out by Criterion, The Thief of Bagdad). So I assume Criterion's The Four Feathers will be that same version, but with sharper, cleaner sound and picture and, of course, the extras.

I bought it today and it is fantastic. The movie looks gorgeous and the features are interesting. Great film and I recommend it.

There is also another source. DVD Beaver says that Criterion has licensed certain masters to a Korean company. You can buy those on ebay for less than $10.00 from a Hong Kong seller. They are excellent quality (I have a few) but have no extras other than sub-titles.
