I didn't mind that Corrigan was a lousy actor and probably neither did the public in his day who knew all about his exploits. It's still an entertaining (thanks to the supporting players) look at his spot in aviation history.

Though it isn't really fair to call him a bad or "lousy" actor since he wasn't an actor at all -- this was his sole venture into acting and the narrative and supporting actors (Paul Kelly and Robert Armstrong) are what carry this picture, regardless.

Character actors could be good or bad - it depends which ones you're talking about. The subject here is Corrigan, who was neither a character actor nor any other kind of actor. He was paid to impersonate himself in this one film, and in my opinion he succeeded admirably in the circumstances.
