Garfield ????

Wasn't he supposed to be dead after the first movie?????

Well, yes, John Garfield's character, kind of, committed vehicular suicide in the first movie, but he became so, extremely popular from this, his film debut, the studio rewrote the follow-up to include him. They got him in via the sister he had married still mourning him and daydreaming about him, also, I think that his photo pops up at times.

It is interesting what the description on the imdb page says, that the third movie just wrote him in as a whole new character. I did not see that movie, but I hope the new character was a little less tragic.

Either way he can't be as bad as the reviewer, who seems to dislike JG, complains, he is, although the story is probably a stretch, really more to capitalize on JG than create anything resembling art.

This is NOT truly a sequel to Four Daughters, nor is it a part of the Daughters/Wives/Mothers trilogy.

While it is true that Daughters Courageous starred Claude rains as the father of Priscilla Lane, Rosemary Lane, Lola Lane and Gale Page they are NOT the same family. Here the family is named Masters. In the other three films they are the Lemp family.

I also realize that many of the supporting cast of the Trilogy appear, they portray different chatacters. For example, Aunt Etta, brilliantly played by May Robson, in the trilogy is demoted from family member to servent as Penny the housekeeper in Daughters Courageous. Jeffrey Lynn, the love interest for Priscilla Lane in all of the movies, was originally Felix the composer/conductor. In Courageous he is a playwright/director.
And of course John Garfield who was such a troubled sou;l in Four Daughters, is simply a trouble maker in Daughters Courageous.

The only real constant (other than same father with four daughters) is that Claude Rains' chacter is all four movies is a musician.

It's a very likeable movie. Once you accept that it is NOT part of the Claude Rains/Daughters/Wives/Mothers trilogy it can easily stand on its own. However if you watch it as a sequel to Four Daughters you'll go crazy at all of the inconsistant incompatability of it all.

Below is a comparison of the overlapping actors;

ACTOR FOUR DAUGHTERS DAUGHTERS COURAGEOUS
Claude Rains Jim Masters Adam Lemp
Priscilla Lane Buff Masters Ann Lemp
Rosemary Lane Tinka Masters Kay Lemp
Lola Lane Linda Masters Thea Lemp
Gale Page Cora Masters Emma Lemp
John Garfield Gabriel Lopez Mickey Borden
Jeffrey Lynn John S. Heming Felix Deitz
May Robson Penny, the Housekeeper Aunt Etta
Frank McHugh George Ben Crowley
Dick Foran Eddie Moore Ernest Talbot

THANK YOU for chiming in twice on these boards (different threads but same issue). It's astonishing to me that people can't perceive the major plot element (widower father vs. deserted mother) that makes clear that DC has nothing to do with the 4D / 4 Wives / 4 Mothers trilogy.
