Bogart's Irish accent...eeeek

Why, when they had genuine Irishman George Brent on set, did they not use him for the Irish "haaarse" handler, instead of Humphrey Bogart? He could no more pass for Irish than he could play a woman or a midget.

reply

Having Bogart affect a brogue was a mistake - his name is enough to tell us he's an Irishman.

In my case, self-absorption is completely justified.

reply

A brogue? Is that what Bogie was trying to do?? Poor.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, or doesn't.

it was funny

His accent is not convincing but I thought the scene in the stable where he learns she is dying was pretty good. We don't see his face but the way he tracks her face and responds physically to the news was, I thought, a good example of an actor wholly in the role and not just waiting stiffly for his next shot or to say his next line.
