It is said that the film was cast in seven theaters in Poland at the time of the German attack. The film was agreed proscription by forces of occupation and the seven managers of theaters arrested and hung by order of Goebbels.

Anatole Litvak decided to make this film when he learned that the representative of Warner Bros in Germany had been beaten by Nazis.
