This was the first American film to depict Nazi Germany as a mortal threat to the US. It was also the first to employ what would become the standard archetypes for Nazis: the sadist, the cold-blooded intellectual, and the dupe.

You mean to say that these characters are stereotypical and empty? Isn't that the case with 88% of total world film output??

If you are correct ... this makes this film a very important film! But the version of the film that I saw did not come out in April 39 ... more like mid 41. There were parts added to it.
