I must be the only one who liked it.

The reviewers here didn't like this film much, particularly the final musical piece. And I can understand some of their unhappiness with it. It is surprising to that, in my opinion, this showcase for the biggest star of MGM had, despite a good cast, a bargain basement feel to it. As for the final number, I actually kind of liked its weird masks and surreal quality, right up until the moment the dancers came in. IMO, the mix of swing music and opera didn't work, and ruined the number for me. But as usual Jeanette was lovely and charming. And Lew Ayres is always a pleasure. Though, I could foresee the happiness of their characters being short-lived. I figure that when he has a flop or two, and her career continues to shine, they'll be in trouble all over again.

I Agree. He had too much self pity and at times when he should have stood up for himself he didn't. When he did stand up for himself, it was because he didn't have the trust in his wife that he should have had. Since his jealously ran deep and relied too much in his own success the next bump in their marriage and he would probably run again.

I adore Jeanette MacDonald, and she's worth an extra star for any picture she is in, but I regard Broadway Serenade as her worst movie I have seen, except for Lottery Bride.
