Was any of it and the deaths necessary?

If Beau new the Gem was fake, why not just stage a robbery and the brothers claim ignorance, burying the fake in the grounds somewhere? Surely they would not have cracked and rolled on each other.

All Beaus' robbery did was cause havoc in the family, get 2 brothers killed and kept 2 lovers apart for (how many years).
