Time for a remake?

Hi all

I grew up on Boy's own adventures such as Beau Geste, and while I can never see any other celluloid version of the story being as good as the Cooper/Milland/Preston version,(though the BBC mini-series in the early '80's was pretty good), I think it's about time The story got the Hollywood 'big budget' makeover. perhaps the Prisoner of Zenda too?

What say?

NO WAY!!!!! I am sick and tired of remakes of Classic Films. Most of the remakes are terrible and unwatchable. The actors and actresses of today can not match the acting of Gary Cooper, James Stewart, and all the others no longer around.

While I generally think remakes are misguided, I don't have a problem with them when it comes to literary properties. Why not let a new generation take a crack at dramatizing a great book? The problem, of course, is finding the actors who can pull off the stoic heroism required for these roles. I'm sure they're out there, but they're not known stars. Hmm, let's see...Leo DeCaprio as Beau; Christian Bale as John; Toby Maguire as Digby. Sergeant LeJaune? (Markoff in the Wellman version) DUNNO. Boldini? (Rasinoff in the Wellman version) Stanley Tucci! NEXT!!

reply

I'm not against a remake but not Leo please. Not only does he not have the charisma of any of the 3 stars here, her has a face that you want to punch.

reply

No, never. If they feel it's time for a remake of this or any other classic they should take their money and restore the original. Use all their CGI expertise to fix deteriorated frames, get rid of scratches and pops, maybe give the original score new life with a new orchestra, and put the sound effects in digital surround sound. No colorization! No changes just freshen it up. I'd pay to see it up on a big screen. I've only seen it on TV.

I agree that this should not be remade. BUT it is funny that point out too those that are so anti-remakes this movie itself is a remake. Of course a lot of silent films were remade.

Nuke the whales! (Gotta nuke somethin')

Given that Beau Geste has already been made 4 times (the 39 version was the 2nd) I dont see any reason why there shouldn't be a new version;
Although I was a little disappointed by the early 200os version of The Four Feathers, one thing I will say about that pic is it was beautifully filmed and they could do a similar great looking version of BG.
Cast? How about Michael Fassbender, Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch as the brothers?
Sean Bean or Sean Pertwee as Markoff/Lejaune?

Joe Wright to direct?

I'd go see that in a heartbeat.

reply

That would be great, I'd go see that.

reply

I wouldn't mind a remake of either this or Prisoner of Zenda.

As long as they.stick.as closely as possible to the original. The only thing wrong with the 1939 version was casting Gary Cooper and Robert Preston as young English aristocrats- surely Errol.Flynn and David Niven would have made more sense?

reply

Eh, probably but I thought the former did fine. This does seem like something David Niven would have a supporting bit.
