Unknown remake

In the late 80's I saw this plot on TV in another movie that I can never find. It was not the German version and definitely not the Debbie Reynolds version, but was probably made prior to the Ginger Rogers version. It was in black and white. The Polly character, who may very well have had a different name, was a store clerk who sold hats. She was fired because so many of the hats she sold were eventually returned. When the trouble with the baby ensues she makes up a fictional ex-husband who left her and was known to throw the tea or coffee pot at her. I actually loved this version much better than any of the ones known today but can find no information about it, which is strange as it was shown on TV in the 80's. Help, anyone?
