Frankly, I was surprised to see a radio that (relatively) portable in the 1930's.
You've got the wrong movie. That was in Shadow of the Thin Man in 1941.

Portable vacuum tube radios were not unheard of but they required multiple
voltages to work which were supplied by rather expensive dry batteries.
