Great movie, but.... Best Picture of '38?

I dunno about that.

I'll watch it again this week sometime. I wasn't even aware that it was best picture that year. I just love the movie.

Well, I don't think I've seen any other picture from 1938, so I guess for the time being, I'd have to agree with that.

I agree, this movie is FUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNN! I just loved it, everybody sliding down the banister, the sister dancing around the whole house, a father making fireworks...it was especially fun when that man from the IRS came by and they did that whole thing, the man plays the xylophone, the sister dances, and the fireworks go off and he runs out of there!

reply

Fun is the word, alright! This is just a fun movie, period.

YES, and you'll notice, it's GOOD CLEAN FUN, and that doesn't make it any less entertaining. Now something as great as this, nobody would think to do today...that's a sad state of affairs where movies are concerned, today there is every option in the world to do ANYTHING in a movie...but if someone were to remake this movie today, the Vanderhof family would be rumpots, crackpots, and Alice's sister would be doing all her dancing in a bikini...well forget that...you give me this anyday...I love it, I LOVE IT. NOW! What I want to know is why nobody's made any movies like this since?

I think people take this comedy too seriously when they say that it's too hokey or preachy, even for Capra. They don't realize that this movie is just fun and wonderful and a fantasy in the best way possible. And come on and admit it--Jean Arthur and Jimmy Stewart are PERFECT together!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zFxjIwUvqg.

Did he train you? Did he rehearse you? Did he tell you *exactly* what to do, what to say?!

reply

This is true, they are perfect together...but I'm not going to say it's JUST fun and wonderful and fantasy, it may be a little preachy but that's because in it is one of the most impotant things to learn that few people, even fewer today, ever learn.

I agree. It is clean and I LOVE that about most old movies (okay, I know there were the Pre-Code movies, but still even those are probably better than what we get today...and far less frequent).

I do, however, think that there were other movies done like this since. This type of film was common in the 30s and 40s and probably even 50s. One such example of screwball with a deeper message is The Philidelphia Story. It lacks the warm and funny family scenes, though, which in my opinion make this movie stand out.

There is an engaging charm which makes for pleasurable viewing. It's all down to the characters within the Sycamore family with their delightful eccentricities.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

It takes a while for the movie to get going but once the Kirby's visit the Sycamore's, that's when the real fun begins. The jail and court scenes are especially great fun.

It's one of my very favorites.
