The 2 remarkable things I noticed

First of all, seeing Bogie being grabbed by the shoulders and pushed around was definitely odd. Here, he's not a supporting actor, and plays his usual tough guy, but a tough guy that others will still feel comfortable with tossing around.

Then, the nearly cameo appearance of Ronald Reagan as the press agent :p

While I found the musical numbers fairly laughable, and easy to fast forward past, Bogie's appearance is always charismatic. I think this was one film I had not seen before, though had been aware of. To date I've viewed 58 of his 75 performances....only 17 more to go :)

Bogie was not a real tough guy. The classic Bogart was invented in 1941 with "The Maltese Falcon". Til then, Bogart took any part that came along just to keep busy. Warner Brothers didn't quite know what to do with him. Cagney, Robinson and Garfield all had personas that were established early on. Bogart played cowards, Irishmen, Mexicans, even a vampire, and he was unintentionally funny in all of them.

Bogart's wife Mayo Methot used to beat the crap out of him on a regular basis. She even stabbed him once. Some tough guy.

Bogart didn't take roles just to keep busy, the studio forced him to take them. He went on strike often but sometimes couldn't avoid being in dreadful films.

"but listen to me, I'm talking to a beautiful woman about another man"

The 'classic' Bogart to me was invented with High Sierra. His first real lead (Ida Lupino did have top billing).

Mad Dog Roy Earl . .

This made 56 of 73 for me. I guess you're counting the 2 films he played himself in, which I don't think should count.

If he played Humphrey Bogart: husband, father, weekend sailor-then no, they shouldn't count. If he played "Humphrey Bogart" wearing a trench coat and smoking a cigarette in the rain, then he's giving a performance, same as any other.
